Groundwater quality index as a hydrochemical tool for monitoring saltwater intrusion into coastal freshwater aquifer of Eastern Dahomey Basin, Southwestern Nigeria

چکیده
Saltwater intrusion into coastal freshwater aquifers is a threat to groundwater quality globally. This study aims determine the extent of saltwater aquifer Eastern Dahomey Basin (EDB), Nigeria. Groundwater chemistry was sampled and analysed for ionic ratios interpreted using hydrochemical facie evolution diagram (HFE-D), mixing index (SMI) (GQIswi). High EC TDS concentration dissolved ions showed increased salinity as result seawater in wells located around communities Seme, Lekki, Eleko, Okun-Ajah, Ode-Mahin Igbokoda. Correlation wet season also suggests higher salinities which originate partly from industrial municipal effluents especially are close river channels, while dry shows dominant influence intrusion. HFE-D revealed that mixed Na + Ca–HCO3, Na–Cl Ca–Cl dominate area due gravity-driven flow leading freshening inland coastline towards northern part basin. The SMI GQIswi areas within 3 km more sensitive based on abstraction rate depth wells. present provides information value planners policy-makers sustainable management protection resources Basin.

Freshwater-saltwater motion in a coastal karstic aquifer -
The case study of the brackish spring of "Almyros of Heraklio" in Crete (Greece) and its vast carbonate coastal aquifer is presented, showing the consequence of preferential flows of continental fresh water and saline sea water in karst galleries in a coastal area. Flow heterogeneity generates unexpected upconing in boreholes, and permits the spring of Almyros not to be directly connected with ...

The Akinbo Formation comprises a sequence of mostly dark, pale-greenish grey, laminated shale, slightly glauconitic shale, sandy shale with subordinate claystone lenses. Selected subsurface samples of the shaly facies as penetrated by Akinside 1582 well in eastern Dahomey basin. were investigated by sedimentological. mineralogical and geochemical parameters to ascertain the hydrocarbon potentia...
متن کاملSaltwater intrusion vulnerability assessment using AHP-GALDIT model in Kashan plain aquifer as critical aquifer in a semi-arid region
Owing to population growth and water demand, coastal aquifers all over the world are over–pumped, resulting in serious problems such as saltwater intrusion. So, in these conditions, assessing the groundwater system’s vulnerability and finding areas with saltwater intrusion potential are vital for the better management of aquifers. In this study, AHP-GALDIT was applied to saltwater intrusion vul...
متن کاملDevelopment of a groundwater quality index for seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers
Coastal aquifers are increasingly threatened by seawater intrusion due to increased urbanization, groundwater exploitation, and global sea-level rise. Pattern diagrams, which constitute the outcome of several hydro-geochemical processes, have traditionally been used to characterize vulnerability to seawater intrusion. However, the formats of such diagrams do not facilitate the geospatial analys...
متن کاملA Finite Volume Unstructured Mesh Method for Modelling Saltwater Intrusion into Aquifer Systems
Saltwater intrusion occurs in coastal areas worldwide and a theoretical investigation of its sources is crucial because dissolved salts are probably the most common contaminants in freshwater. In the case of coastal aquifers, contamination arises from saltwater invasion, caused primarily by human activities due to heavy urbanisation. Hence, there is a need to predict the location and movement o...
